Accounts of how much teachers spend on classroom supplies vary, with educators stating their out-of-pocket expenses can fall between 200 up to a whopping 2,000 per school year. The IRS also reminds educators to keep good records, including receipts, cancelled checks and other documentation. Qualified expenses don’t include the cost of homeschooling or nonathletic supplies for courses in health or physical education.But there are many classroom supplies beyond the basics that are not covered by parents or provided by the school. But the IRS cautions that, for these expenses, it may be more beneficial to claim another educational tax benefit, especially the lifetime learning credit. In the 2022 school year, families with children in elementary through high school plan to spend an average of 864 on school supplies, up 167 from 2019, according to a National Retail Federation report. ![]()
